‘Arrive Alive’ tour visits Glen Allen HS

ArriveAlive2Dylan Gordon, a senior at Glen Allen H.S., took the wheel of a high-tech simulator May 21 as the Arrive Alive Tour from UNITE visited GAHS to raise awareness among teens of the dangers of distracted and drunken driving. Storn Olson of UNITE looked on from the window as Gordon, using a video simulator, moved from focused “driving” to driving while texting and while impaired. Olson responded by issuing a mock citation to Gordon and to other students illustrating the financial and legal consequences that would have resulted from their simulated accidents.

The tour, which allows students to experience consequences in a controlled and safe environment, visited GAHS after students there won the 2013 “Arrive Alive PSA Contest,” sponsored by Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO), UNITE International, and the Virginia State Police Association (VSPA). The tour targets high school students because drivers under 20 years old have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
